“Good Food but Over Priced”

We had heard a lot about this place and finally got a chance to visit SWATI SNACKS. This is a small little joint, with simple decor and very simple but quality food. The ingredients used are fresh, the services is good, the food is tasty too, but I had a feel that this place is a little over priced. I mean, a glass of butter milk or lemon juice or even a extra Roti for Rs. 140 /-that's too much.

I feel this place is much hyped and there are much better place to eat at good price too.

Best family restaurant...Amazing variety!

Swati restaurant in tardeo is pure vegetarian restaurant. here they get mix cuisine like gujrati food and South Indian food and pizza and pav bhajis. food is very tasty. Their speciality is panki,satpadi roti gatta nu shak and Jalebi is also very nice with sprinkle of amlonds on the top. they also serves sugercane juice and golas. food is very good but expensive. Its ambience is good and well placed since many years and has been always crowded.

Swati is an 100% veggie restaurant targeted for Gujarati Customers. Very tiny place with only ten tables. Be prepared to wait for 40 minutes on a weekend.
This place is unique serving simple traditional food at street-fare and preparing it hygienically. Kitchen is see-through so you can see how your food is prepared.They use Bisleri water for all their food and their preparers wear plastic gloves.
Panki, malai malpua, gatta nu shaak and satpadi roti, potato papad, pani puri, sev puri, sugarcane juice are some of their best sellers.
This is the quintessential place to snack out and comfort your craving for home-made goodness, outside home.

Local food at its best...

This is a place one should not miss. It is Vegetarian, with a lot of unusual items that you cannot find in restaurants elsewhere in India. It has Snacks from all over India; the Samosa Chat from North, Panki and Thalipith Pitla from Maharashtra, Dal-Bati from Rajasthan, Dosa-Idli from the South and the all time favourite Bhel and Dahi batata puri.
ITEMS YOU SHOULDN"T MISS: Mohan thal and Malpuva. Also the new item they have introduced is the Bajri Uttapam which is fantastic.
You can ask for items without onion and garlic. One can have the fresh coconut juice. The Sugarcane juice is fresh.
The Ice creams are all home made and very fresh with some seasonal fruit based varieties like Sitafal, Orange and Strawberry.
The hygiene is unbeatable and the food consistency is par excellence.

Amazing Food

Swati Snacks has been around for 40 years or so now and they have perfected the art of making yummylicious Gujarati cuisine. Its one of the oldest establishments apart from the thali restaurants which serve Gujarati dishes in an A la carte format.

If you are coming here during the weekend, like we did last night, be ready for a waiting time of atleast 35-40 minutes. Some out-of-the-box thinking customers order some starters on the take-away counter and eat them while waiting for their turn to come. Or to avoid all that come during the weekdays and eat at your leisure.

We were shown our table after waiting for exactly 38 minutes. Steel bench and wooden top tables are the order of the day. They have a 3 rows, the tables on right & left rows can seat 4 persons & the middle row can seat 6 persons, so if you are a going in a bigger group be ready to sit separately.

But when you are being served sumptuous food, who cares about the seating arrangement?

The interior is nice and noisy with ambient lighting. We were attended to almost within 2 minutes of seating ourselves.

We had utilised the waiting time to finalise the order and just fired away:
1] Sev Puri - The taste is different from the regular sev puri. The chutney they use is slightly spicy and tangy hence the difference. Wow!

2] Dahi Batata Puri - Run-of-the-mill Dahi Batata puri. It was ok-ish.

3] Paani Puri - They give you a combination of spiced alu, sprouts and boiled chana as a filling for the puri. The paani is spicy and tastes nice.

4] Bajri Khichu - Upma like dish made from bajra rawa and served with a red mild spicy chutney mixed with oil / ghee. Loved the chutney.

5] Pav Bhaji - One of the better Pav Bhaji I have had in a long time. The dominant taste is of the tomato and not the spices. It is spicy but not over-bearingly so.

6] Bajri Uttapam - Their in-house innovation. The Uttapam is entirely made from Bajra and has a tangy taste to it, served with spicy green chutney.

7] Dal Dhokli - WOOOOW is the word that describes this dish. Strips of wheat flour dough added to a typically sweet & mild spicy Gujarati dal and cooked together. Its a meal by itself.

8] Dal Baati Churma - Wheat flour balls, boiled in water and then roasted in a tandoor served with dal, ghee and churma. Churma is the made of the left over dough, fried in ghee, crushed and mixed with jaggery. This dish is srved with a stuffed green chilly, which is just wow! I shamelessly asked for an extra serving.
This dish has its origins in the Malwa region of Rajasthan.

9] Undhiyu with Jowar rotla - Mind blowing Undhiyu, the best dish of the evening. The Undhiyu was not in an "Oil Pool", no over bearing taste of garlic and you could feel the flavour of each vegetable.

10] Kadhi Khichdi with Alu shaak - Khichdi with gujarati spicy & sour kadhi served with mild spicy potato veggie.

11] Pudina Chhas - Creamy buttermilk whipped with pudina leaves to form a killer combination. Loved it!

The service is one of the best I have come across. The orders were brought out and served even faster than I thought considering the crowd they were catering to; maybe they have accustomed themselves to it.

The total bill for all of the above came to Rs.2,290 for 6 people, Rs.380 per head; is a very value for money proposition.

However the prices of some items didn't quite go down well. A Wada Pav is listed for Rs.140 which is 14 times the cost of street price. Agreed that for quality you do have to pay a price but 14 times is exorbitant & also the fact that some of the best Wada Pav in Mumbai is the street side one.

Again this is an individualistic view and nothing against the management, they charge it and they have clients who pay.

I'm coming again and recommending people to visit this restaurant as well.

All time favourite fast food place..

pani puri, panki, satpadi, falafal, dal dhokli, sugarcane fizz, natural orange ice cream, roasted almond.... n loads more can drive anyone mad...The best gujrathi snacks in town..

Mouth watering Gujju Food

40 years ago, a little restaurant started in Bombay. Food was cooked at home and served at the restaurant. Over the years, it has grown in size and reputation. Today it has become an institution with Additions to the Menu (so I've heard from people who have been going from the time it started), Hygiene, Quality, Delicacies, Service and Mouth- watering Gujju food (a cuisine which the Gujarati's eat at home).

The restaurant has become so popular and is frequently visited by Celebs. There is always a huge crowd waiting to get inside. They also provide catering services for weddings, etc.

I happened to be in Bombay (Mumbai) to explore good places to eat and after a tough day, my relatives recommended we dine at "Swati Snacks" for dinner. We reached the venue at 8:30 pm on a Sunday. Like I said, huge crowd is always waiting to get inside. Seeing the crowd was a big turnoff for me and made me wonder what made these people wait so long to get inside a restaurant which serves the same cuisine which they eat at home. I mean what was the big deal ?!? And I found my answer...

Parking was not a problem as they have Valet Service to take care of the needful.

The service is good and the staff smiles. Since I had heard so much about "Swati Snacks" already, I did not care to look at the snacks section of the menu (which contained South Indian dishes and Chaat) but my relatives ordered Gol Gappa also known as Puchhka / Pani Puri to which the first thought that came to my mind was that there are other better places in Mumbai to have it, until the plates were served!

Crispy Puri is made from Semolina (Suji) or Wheat (Atta). Served with chilled mint flavored water. With Mint I could taste a lot of Coriander too (Dhaniya). The plate also contains Hot Ragda (it compliments the chilled mint water), Sprouts, Boiled Chickpeas (Kabuli Channa), small pieces of Potatoes mixed in very little chilly powder and Tamarind (Imli) Chutney (sauce). When my favorite "Panipuri wallah" is serving me these delightful little puri's one after the other, I go on eating till I get no more. This too was fairly Good!

We then ordered the Panki Chatni. Its a corn pancake which is steamed between Banana leaves. Frankly, I have never had this before but now I understand why people love this traditional dish so much. Served with Green Chilly and Coriander Chutney. The uniqueness lies in its Flavor. Plus with the caliber with which it is spread on the Banana leaves so that when you remove the Panki from the leaves to eat, it comes out so smoothly that it melts in your mouth. It is so different that its certainly capitalizing on their secret Panki recipe.

After this, we ordered the Satpadi Roti - Gatta nu Shak, one of their most popular dish. Gatta being made of Besan (Gram Flour) Rolls in Curd Gravy. Satpadi Roti is made of Plain flour, coriander leaves and cooked with a lot of Ghee. Though I did not enjoy much of the Roti but I enjoyed the Gatta ki sabzi. Its spicy and gives a whole new taste. Takes time to make this Saag, as I recall my mother informing me about the procedure to cook this dish, back home.

Ice Cream - The Ice creams at Swati are all freshly Hand - made and they do not pack for take - away. And believe me when I say that the staff is polite enough to tell that the ice - cream will start melting in less than 10 minutes and it is not a good idea.

We had the Seetafal Ice Cream, also known as sweet apple / custard apple, which again is very famous here and an excellent source of Vitamin A, C and Calcium :P

Simply WOW!!
I enjoyed every bit of the meal here. Since these were dishes one cannot find at regular joints. The ambiance is pleasant, cleanliness is evident and service is decent. I would really like to go again and so should you.

That feel of home!

If you are missing those days of Dal Dhokli, Gattha nu Shaak etc. you must visit Swati Snacks for sure. It has won many awards from timeout. Really nice food and good service. Must visit.

Almost close to home food!

I m a regular at Swati since the past 10 years. And seen some changes as well. The food is almost close to home food. You can eat here daily. The panki, vada-pao, bajra khichyu, sugarcane juice and sancha ice creams is food that you will not get anywhere else in Mumbai. Though the prices are also not something you will see in Mumbai. almost Rs.100 for a sev puri! But I feel its worth the money spent as the quality of food is very very good.

Fading Credibility -- Loyal Patrons Losing Hope

Had been a regular and loyal Swati customer since last decade ; the place seems to have lost completely and taken the appreciation of its customers and media over its head. Very much disappointed since last 2 years on all aspects - be it food quality, ambiance, service and above all hygiene. Air conditioners are many times not properly working, even when all 4 ACs are ON they seem to choke-up and hence not properly blowing air ; and when blowing air, the fog clearly is visible. Food quality is getting deteriorated every passing day -- just take the example of my last two visits during last three weeks, Dosas are delivered which are partly black from the bottom -- probably because of some issue with their dosa-pan. Theplas are delivered partially burnt -- This is not the food we were used to eat in Swati and for which so many awards were awarded which are prominently displayed on the wall of the restaurant even today. Todays Swati seems to be a kingdom without king and the most affected ones are the loyal customers like us who are fond of eating out every weekend at Swati.

i've been frequenting this stall for the last 20 years atleast now... right from the time I was in standard 1 coming with my elder sister who still is a fan of Chaat bringing her children too...... and everytime the taste is just the same or I can say tastier and more tastier. Never had more delicious dahi puri, dahiwada and bhel in my life than at Swati. Definitely droolworthy... and a must visit for roadside-food lovers..!!!!!
